I endeavor to create visually compelling images that evoke emotion and an appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds us.-R. Hirsch

Trained academically as a biologist and natural historian, Robb Hirsch developed an intimate relationship with the natural world. This connection was established early during annual childhood visits to Yosemite, exploring and developing a sense of oneness with this magical place. After his undergraduate degree in Biology, Robb traveled through Africa, Central America and the western United States, absorbing the beauty while gaining a deep understanding of these surroundings. He established a career as a field biologist, working for USGS, California State Parks and several private firms, focusing primarily on threatened and endangered species. He began selling fine art prints in 2002 to a very receptive audience and has experienced consistent growth since. Twice his images have been named winners in the Nature’s Best, Windland Rice Smith Nature Photography Competition, one of the most prestigious international contests. He has had several solo gallery showings, and numerous publications in calendars (including Sierra Club), and several magazines and books.

Robb prefers spending extended periods in the backcountry to experience the natural history of the ecosystem at hand; his photography is an extension of this love for the natural world. Scouting locations incessantly, Robb attempts to combine alluring locations and complementary illumination. He enjoys shooting everything from wildlife to wildflowers, from grand landscapes to tiny abstracts. Robb’s images are known for their compelling subjects, careful compositions and fine light.

His photography can be viewed at his Sierra Nevada gallery Mountain Sage in Groveland, California, The Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite Valley, and at RobbHirschPhoto.com.
